Cornelia Schneider
Interim Professor of Data Science at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. My research connects function spaces, regularity theory, adaptive numerical methods and neural network approximation.
About
My work sits between the regularity theory of partial differential equations and approximation theory. One question runs through all of it: how well can a solution be approximated, and which function space tells us so? The answer decides whether adaptive finite element, wavelet or neural network methods are worth their extra effort. In practice this ranges from Sobolev and Besov regularity on non-smooth domains and manifolds, through space-time adaptivity and approximation classes for evolution equations, to nonlocal gradients and constructive approximation with deep neural networks.
I received my PhD from Leipzig University in 2009 and then spent a postdoctoral year at the Universidade de Coimbra in Portugal. Since 2010 I have been a member of the Department of Mathematics at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, most recently as Akademische Oberrätin (Assistant Professor), and I habilitated at Philipps-University Marburg in 2020. Since 2025 I hold an interim W3 professorship for Data Science.
My research has been supported by two grants of the German Research Foundation (DFG). In 2026 my teaching was recognised with the Teaching Award of the Faculty of Sciences at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg.
